This mural was commissioned by the Keep Carterton Beautiful Group and is aimed at achieving several goals.

First and foremost, it's a vibrant and engaging public artwork in the center of Carterton. It reflects the area's thriving arts community, the future of the town in its diverse young students, and the very present landscape of the area with its country town heritage.

On a practical level, it also points the way to Carterton School, the largest school in the town. But the actions of the figures in the painting aren't randomly chosen; they represent the six 'trees of learning' that form the basis of the school's charter. Carterton School Learners are:

  • Respectful
  • Motivated learners
  • Effective communicators
  • Connected to their community and environment
  • Effective team members
  • And strive for excellence

Each of the figures embodies one or more of these fundamental tenets of Carterton School.

Given the drive to connect Carterton School students to their community and environment, it was natural thing to ensure the kids were involved in both the conceptual process and the actual painting. From brainstorming workshops to painting sessions, the children and other community members have shared ownership of the mural.
