Nectarine Website Portfolio - Plum Tree Studios

Plum Tree Studios - www.plumtreestudios.co.nz

Cathryn and Marty at Plum Tree Studios make absolutely gorgeous studios: beautifully designed and finished with superb craftsmanship. They had a website, but it was starting to show its age: it didn't look good on mobile phones, it wasn't ranking well with search engines, and the pictures were tiny and not as exciting as they could be.

So we leapt into a new, revamped site. We kept it clean and simple, allowing their two main logo colours and the power of their images to shine through. We rewrote some copy to really communicate how lovely these studios are, and we worked some SEO magic to make sure that the site climbs in the search rankings for the most common terms people will be searching on.

The new site reflects the beauty and quality of their studios, and it's responsive so it looks good on your desktop, tablet or mobile device!

So if you're looking for that perfect office, art studio, guest room, granny flat or sleepout, head over to Plum Tree Studios and you'll find your dream cottage!

Last year we launched a new site for award-winning Auckland-based photographer Emma Bass (which replaced a site we'd created for her many years ago in the ancient times of the 'net when Flash ruled the world).

It's always very satisfying to see a website become a focal point for growing a career, and the latest update reflects the Emma's continued rise in the field in both the professional and artistic areas.

Her Imperfect exhibition was such an ongoing success that she's launching Imperfect II soon. The site revamp highlights this thriving artistic side by splitting those projects from her professional work, thus in essence creating two sites:

Emma Bass Photography 2013

The new site includes a details of Emma's upcoming and past exhibitions, more work categories including Phone Moments, and an updated Press section.

Emma Bass Photography Press 2013

We look forward to celebrating the success of Imperfect II, and expect Emma will be exhibiting internationally soon!

Visit Emma's site at www.emmabass.co.nz.

Camp Anderson is situated at Riversdale Beach, 55kms south-east of Masterton on the Wairarapa’s eastern coast. It’s a wonderful choice for people who enjoy swimming, diving, fishing or simply enjoying an unspoilt beach environment.

Camp Anderson Home - Nectarine Website Portfolio

The camp is a perfect venue for school groups, sports groups, church retreats, business team building retreats, conferences and family gatherings. But sadly, their previous website was very out of date and only worked in Internet Explorer. Nectarine were engaged to bring a new, vibrant look to the site and update it to modern web standards.

Camp Anderson - Home page, School Camps page, Mobile version

The new site captures the gorgeous coastal nature of the camp, using large engaging images. We worked hard to whip the text into shape so it told their story simply but evocatively, and added in testimonials to show how many diverse groups had enjoyed their time at the camp. We also added an online system to make the process of booking as easy as possible.

And of course, the site uses a responsive design that reformats itself for mobile devices.

You can find out more about Camp Anderson at www.campanderson.co.nz

Four years ago we created a free website to promote one of Carterton's fabulously unique days, The Great Carterton Wheelbarrow Race.

The Great Carterton Wheelbarrow Race

The day comprises many events and activities, including kids and adults races, mobility scooter race and decorated barrows and more. The highlight, however, is the Gladston To Carterton Endurance Event. For this, two mad (and madly fit) competitors take it in turns to push each other in a wheelbarrow the whole 13 kilometers from Gladstone to Carterton!

The race celebrates the story of one of the Wairarapa's earliest settlers, Samuel Oates.

Family legend says that Samuel started working for Charles Rooking Carter (one of Carterton's founding fathers who the town is named after) almost as soon as he arrived in New Zealand in January 1856, assisting with the construction of a hotel and a butcher’s shop.

Carter then asked him to take some goods to his Wairarapa farm. Samuel’s three-day journey over the Rimutakas, pulling and pushing a substantial wooden wheelbarrow, became Wairarapa legend.

For the upcoming event, we gave the site a fresh look and major overhaul, using a responsive template called Madison that adapts itself for mobile devices, tablets and desktops:

We're looking forward to continued involvement with the WheelBarrow Race over the coming years, and Minty's aiming to do better than his previous 5th placing at the Strongman competition!

HELO, the Home Early Learning Organisation of New Zealand, represents nearly 9000 children and 50% of the in-home ECE sector, including over 4000 Educators, Nannies and Au Pairs.

They needed a site up promptly to describe their organisation, their aims, and call for further members.

Nectarine leapt to the task and in a few days they were up and running with a clean, intuitive, SEO-optimised website. It's also responsive - the layout adapts itself for small screen devices - and the membership form writes to a database that can be exported in a variety of ways to make managing their member list easy.

As a farrier, you'll often find you need particular supplies in a hurry, and being able find what you want 24 hours a day is a big bonus. That's why M&J Farrier Supplies got in touch with us about a website, and now they're offering hundreds of products online to help keep horses in the Wairarapa and Wellington areas in great shape.

Marshall is a New Zealand Qualified Farrier, with almost 20 years experience. He and his wife Jo were tossing around possible domain names for the website when we suggested "Hey, you're the farrier. Let's just go for 'thefarrier.co.nz' - easy to read, easy to spell, easy to remember." Choosing a good domain name is important, and those three qualities are always worth keeping in mind.

Some websites are large, and have complex requirements. Some are small, and actually benefit from keeping things as lean as possible!

The website for the Wairarapa Summer Rally is a good example of the latter. It provides information quickly and cleanly, and in a conscious decision to keep thing simple, has no menu- a single 'Buy Tickets' button is all that was needed.

The background picture of the Wairarapa hills rushing towards you was provided by the excellent people at The Sign Factory in Masterton. It does make life easier when you start with a great image!

Of all the myriad stories to emerge from the chaos and horror of the Second World War, Ray Parkin’s is perhaps the most fascinating and illuminating.

A self-educated Petty Officer, Ray Parkin developed into one of the most acute chroniclers of the POW experience in Java, The Thai-Burma Railway and Japan, writing three classic books on his experiences. He was also an artist of note, and his visual record of those years serves as one of the most powerful and moving accounts of the experience.

Ray Parkin’s Odyssey, by Pattie Wright, is the first full and comprehensive account of the life and wartime experiences of the late Ray Parkin.

Bek and I had the honour of meeting Ray in 2003, and we're proud to have created a site to support his astonishing legacy.

Irena Stenner allows the astounding creative power of the right brain functions to flourish with her art-based team-building workshops!

As Irena says, "We live in a world dominated by left-brain thinking and are only just starting to discover how innovative, wise and creative our right-brain intelligence is. Not only does it help find unique and innovative solutions to problems, it also generates a sense of well-being and builds connections between people and joy. This in turn leads to productive, positive and sustainable workplaces."

In my own travels, I've found that trying to get the mix of the left brain (with its analytical and logical processes) working in concert with the creative and lateral right brain is a tricky balancing act, but can be very rewarding. Some of my friends would no doubt posit that it's especially impressive for someone appears at times to have only half a brain. Given that some theories suggest we only use 10% of our brain capacity, then a quick trip via calculus would put the final tally at somewhere around Π/2.71, I figure (accurate only to 8 decimal places).

Anyhoo... Irena's workshops are fab, what people produce in them is amazing, her own artwork's gorgeous, and we're pretty happy with the site we put together to tell the world about her! www.irenastenner.com

The Wairarapa Montessori Children’s House offers a peaceful and orderly environment that fosters a love of learning. It is based around a structured curriculum, supported by Montessori-trained teachers and special Montessori learning equipment.

Our own kids are at the Montessori School at South End in Carterton, so we're quite familiar with what a Montessori education has to offer. Having also served on the board at Carterton School for 4 years, I believe that so much of primary schooling is about personality; if children are happy in their school environment, they'll learn and thrive.

For some kids that's a mainstream environment, for others it's something like Montessori. In fact, we're fairly lucky that we have a diverse range of options in our neighbourhood. A solid grounding in core curriculum subjects is vital, but I also love seeing them extending themselves with practical skills: cooking, gardening, cleaning, and taking responsibility.

Montessori has been great for our kids. If you're considering it for yours, give Pauline a bell at Wairarapa Montessori Children’s House on 06 370 1471!

Award-winning photographer Emma Bass applies her talents to a diverse range of subject matter. Her world is visual… light and colour are her lifeblood.

Emma's images have graced the covers of New Zealand Grace, New Zealand Weddings, North & South, Pro Design, Listener and Next. She has won eight NZAIPP (New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers) Silver awards, four Gold Kodak awards and two Silver APIA awards.

Emma's work is astounding, so we were very pleased to created a site for her. By using WordPress and the NextGen Gallery plug-in, we've made it easy for Emma to update, organise and caption the images herself, and she's leapt into blogging with enthusiasm!

Her fabulous IMPERFECT exhibition opens tonight at Black Asterisk Gallery in Auckland, so if you're around, make sure you head in for a look!

Linda Penlington recently moved to Carterton and opened her Gain Momentum fitness studio.

Linda works with people to help them improve flexibility, increase strength, sculpt and tone their shape, or recover from injury. She also specialises in movement therapy for kids, and training for recovery from brain injuries.

Naturally, here at Nectarine we're already so strong that anything more would be lethal, and the way we bend over backwards for our clients makes increased flexibility superflous. So while we may not be in dire immediate need of Linda's services, we were very happy to whip up a website for her to let people know about the fabulous things she offers.

Linda's boundless enthusiasm and extensive knowledge will help you gain momentum towards a healthy, happy life!

Frillys Gluten Free website By Nectarine

Frillys Gluten Free

When chef Sean Barnes found out in 2009 that he had Coeliac disease (a severe intolerance to gluten), like so many others he was left dismayed at suddenly having to miss out when eating out.

Since then, Sean has been perfecting his gluten-free recipes and he and partner Kate have made it their personal mission to provide delectable, decadent treats to those who have been left wanting for so long!

Nectarine's mission was to create a site that reflected their quirky branding, allowed customers to purchase their gluten-free products online, and also promoted their fabulous Goodness Of Food Café in Carterton. We've captured that in the design, and in the shop you'll find a sumptuous range of cheesecakes, slices and bread for sale. You can also grab a sneak peak at Café delights such as Salmon kedgeree risotto with poached egg and chutney, Ravioli with blackened sage butter and served with garlic bread, and Battered blue cod & chips with side salad.

Okay, I have to stop writing now- my mouth's watering!

Kuranui College is just down the road in Greytown, and they've been on an ambitious updating and modernisation program for some time now. A suite of seven Science and Mathematics classrooms were completed in 2011, and 2012 will see the construction of new Visual Art classrooms. They're also very focused on raising their educational standards and achievement levels, and the dedication over the last few years is showing dividends.

Along with all their real world upgrades, Kuranui were also keen to update their online presence; their website was starting to show its age.

We've given it a shiny new look, added extra content, and brought more clarity and appeal to the interface. Over the next few months I'm really looking forward to working closely with Kuranui staff, expanding the site and showing off all the facets of college's exciting developments!

Launch the Kuranui College website.

Just down the road from us, right on the bustling Main Street in Greytown, is a glorious haven for any artist: the Village Art Shop. It's a wonderland of paints and pastels, pencils and paper, brushes and bristles, frames and more!

The new owners, jewellery artist Richard Hassell and painter Janie Nott, have expanded on the fantastic range to include inspirational books and art products aimed at kids, which make for adorable gifts.

We headed down to help celebrate their success as they took on the business from long-time owner and art community supporter Vanessa, and then ran around taking pictures of both the fabulous, friendly staff and the glorious delights that abound within. What fun!

If you noodle over to the website, we're sure you'll find something to get your artistic juices flowing...

Before heading to the fair shores of Aotearoa, we ran a multimedia and web business in Melbourne for over a decade, so it's not unusual to get a call from across the ditch about work!

In this case, it was Newcastle City Council; they were embarking on a water safety education programme, and wanted some online games to support the project. We chatted about their key messages and then Bek and I suggested four game concepts built around those themes, which they happily agreed to.

Bek worked her graphic magic and I added some ninja code skills, and soon four shiny games appeared, using our favoured blend of fun, humour and animation while also delivered a vital safety message. Have a play!
